The Middle Matters: An Overlooked Opportunity for Growth

For many nonprofits, fundraising attention tends to gravitate toward two ends of the donor spectrum: bringing new supporters into the fold and cultivating transformational or major gifts.

But somewhere in the middle sits a group with tremendous, and often underdeveloped, potential: loyal donors who already believe in the mission, give consistently, and may be ready for a deeper relationship with the organization.

At Stillwater, we often remind clients of a simple fundraising truth: it is almost always easier and more efficient to deepen the commitment of people who already know, trust, and support an organization than it is to continually find entirely new donors.

That makes a thoughtful mid-level giving strategy one of the most practical opportunities for sustainable fundraising growth.

The key word is thoughtful.

Simply asking a $500 donor to give $1,000, or a $1,000 donor to give $2,500, isn't much of a strategy. Donors are far more likely to increase their support when they better understand what additional generosity can make possible and why their increased investment matters.

That doesn't mean every gift needs to be tied to a narrowly defined funding need or the purchase of a specific item. In fact, some of the most compelling opportunities invite donors to help advance an important organizational priority: expanding a program, reaching more people, extending the impact of an essential service, strengthening capacity, or accelerating progress toward a strategic goal.

Specificity gives generosity purpose.

Just as importantly, mid-level donors often respond to a stronger sense of connection and belonging.

A thoughtfully designed giving society, for example, can recognize these supporters as an important community within the organization. The strongest programs aren't built primarily around premiums or perks. They're built around relationships - meaningful communication, opportunities to hear directly from organizational leaders, invitations to experience the mission more closely, and thoughtful recognition of the donor's role in making the work possible.

Recurring giving can be especially powerful when paired with this approach. A donor contributing $100 each month is making a meaningful $1,200 annual commitment. At $250 per month, that becomes $3,000 a year. Making recurring giving simple—and thoughtfully incorporating recurring donors into broader stewardship and recognition strategies—can help organizations build both stronger donor relationships and more predictable revenue.

But perhaps the greatest value of mid-level giving isn't what it produces today. It is an opportunity to build deeper relationships for tomorrow.

When these donors are known, thanked, engaged, and invited into increasingly meaningful opportunities to support the mission, something important happens: today's well-stewarded mid-level donors often become tomorrow's most committed supporters.

The opportunity isn't simply to ask loyal donors for more. It's to give them more reasons to care, connect, belong, and invest in something they feel a part of.

Handled well, that progression can become one of the healthiest pathways in an organization's fundraising program. Today's engaged mid-level donor may become tomorrow's major donor, campaign leader, legacy giver, ambassador, board member, and lifelong champion.

And that is why the middle matters.
