In times when fundraising feels noisy or uncertain, many nonprofit leaders default to one of two responses: wait for stability or push broadly and hope something sticks. There is a better option.
At Stillwater Strategy Partners, we call it the Micro-Campaign - a disciplined, three to four month fundraising effort built around a single funding priority and a clearly defined goal.
Not a vague seasonal appeal. Not an open-ended “support our work” message. But a focused push with real structure and real intention. The Micro-Campaign works because clarity drives generosity.
One priority.
One outcome.
One defined target.
For example: We will raise $50,000 by June 30 to expand our afterschool program to serve 25 more students than we're able to serve today.
That level of specificity changes the conversation. Donors can see the finish line. Board members can articulate the need. Staff can align their messaging. Momentum builds because everyone understands what success looks like. These efforts borrowing rigor from what we've learned from major multi-year Campaigns (which we often describe as having a "Capital C."
Though shorter in duration, the Micro-Campaign mirrors the discipline of a larger campaign. They begin with a prioritized prospect list - individuals, foundations, and partners most likely to lead. Outreach starts at the top, inviting those with highest affinity to the need to give first. Early commitments then create credibility and confidence.
Board and staff lead the effort. Personal outreach comes first: calls, visits, tailored conversations. Foundation proposals are targeted and timely, building - hopefully - on relationships and understanding that have already been established. Direct mail, email, and social media reinforce the case and create urgency - all aligned around the same clear message. This is not marketing-driven fundraising. It is leadership-driven fundraising, supported by smart communications.
The Micro-Campaign does more than raise dollars. It sharpens focus. It strengthens board engagement.
It validates messaging. It builds internal belief.
For organizations not ready for a comprehensive campaign, it can serve as a training or proving ground. For those navigating uncertain times, it offers momentum without overreach.
At Stillwater, we believe fundraising works best when it is clear, relational, and disciplined. The Micro-Campaign embodies that philosophy. It gathers energy around a single priority and channels it toward measurable impact - quickly, intentionally, and together.
Three to four months.
One clear goal.
$50,000 raised with purpose.
We've seen it work: concentrated effort is exactly what moves an organization forward. For more information about Stillwater Strategy Partners' programs to support trust-based fundraising, click here.
